SHAPING San Francisco
(for Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, NT 4.0 only) on CD-ROM

Shaping San Francisco is designed to create a new kind of public space around our shared histories. With that in mind, our CD-ROM for home use is not the only way to experience the project. Alternatively we maintain a network of public kiosks around San Francisco.
In any
case, Shaping San Francisco is not the last word on local history,
but the beginning of a media experiment in which we can tell each other how
things were, what shaped our lives, what was tried and what worked and what
didn't. Our goal is to see Shaping San Francisco grow and publish
future editions. As Shaping San Francisco becomes more widely
used it can reach the goal we set for it of becoming a living archive of San
Francisco.
The CD-ROM and public kiosk versions feature 30 topics and 22 neighborhoods
spread over more than 1,200 screens. The photo quality is vastly improved
over the website version and includes dozens of sound clips, historic film
and video interviews, as well as a number of original animations, hundreds
of texts and nearly 2,500 photographs of rare historic images and contemporary
photos.
The CD-ROM
version is limited by the size of the medium to 650 MB of content. Thus, about
half of our video clips had to be excluded from the CD version. However, we
have prepared a 2nd CD which can be acquired, along with instructions for
installing it and running the full 2nd edition version of the project, for
an additional $10 directly from
us. You can send us a check payable to "Shaping San Francisco"
to 1310 Mission Street, San Francisco, CA 94103, or email
us to find out more. Please specify in any email messages that you are inquiring
about our 2nd edition supplemental clip CD.
