Dear Supervisors Chris Daly, Matt Gonzalez, Jake McGoldrick, and Aaron Peskin:
With your support the Grant Building Tenants Association has won a spectacular victory in our negotiations with Seligman Western Enterprises. Most of our members have either signed or are about to sign new leases with rents set at levels agreed to by the GBTA and the landlord.
As you know, the Grant Building at 1095 Market Street is home to a group of small businesses, nonprofits, and artists. Your support has assisted us in taking the first step in what needs to be a more ambitious effort to stabilize rents and living conditions for these important constituents in the Mid-Market and South of Market areas.
We were pleased by the willingness of your staff members to listen carefully to our situation and to help us maintain communications with all of you. This struggle clearly demonstrates the importance of cross-district cooperation on City-wide issues such as housing and gentrification.
We look forward to working closely with you in the future to protect and further the interests of all the business people and residents in the Mid-Market area.
Sincerely, for the Grant Building Tenants Association,
Manny Alarcon (The Printout), Bob Armstrong (journalist), Al Belkebir (IFAM), James Brook (poet, translator, editor), Chris Carlsson and Jim Swanson (Shaping San Francisco), Mary Ellen Churchill (Grand Illusions Film and Video), Mohan Das (book dealer), José Galindo (visual artist), Sean Hanlon (Spin Cycle), Pat Henderson (S.F.
